University Hospital of Umeå

University Hospital of Umeå, Region Västerbotten, is responsible for highly specialized healthcare and services for 900,000 people living in an area that covers more than half of Sweden. To become more efficient and to meet the increased need for healthcare and the growing demand for healthcare and social services, digitization is required. A key factor is to engage both healthcare professionals, patients, and collaborative partners to develop and utilize new digital tools for the future of healthcare. With strong technical expertise from Medical Technology – research and development, we can collectively contribute to the digitization of the healthcare sector.

Our services

Through the region’s innovation office, support is provided in the form of advisory services and guidance regarding funding opportunities that connect healthcare and the business sector.

In Region Västerbotten, there is a Rural Medical Center designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a visitation point for primary care in rural areas to share experiences and knowledge with other European countries regarding the provision of healthcare in sparsely populated areas. The region also has innovation clinics for the evaluation of new working methods and new technology. The Department of Medical Technology – Research and Development can provide consultation on medical equipment, and the Clinical Research Center can offer support with questions related to clinical studies.

Through the research infrastructure of Medical Technology – Research and Development and the center CMTF, there is an opportunity to find the right expertise both locally at the University Hospital of Umeå and Umeå University, nationally through Medtech4Health, and in Europe through organizations like The European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES) and the European Connected Health Alliance (ECHA).

With the support tool Medtech Innovation Guide, efficient assistance is provided in the medical technology innovation process. Several levels of training packages linked to the digital innovation tool are offered.
